    How to chose the right lithium Battery.

    Its important to consider the following factors when choosing the right Lithium Battery for your application:

      • CERTIFICATION, safety is a critical factor, so make sure you chose a battery that meets all the standards for sale. UKCA for UK, CE for Europe, ROHS Restriction of Hazardous Substances, RED Radio Equipment Directive if it has Bluetooth. UN38.8 approval – United Nations governs approval for the transportation of Lithium via rail, road, sea and air.  Are the batteries Verified and approved by the NCC? Are the cells UL listed? This is advanced standard created by a US based testing company that all cells should meet ensuring they are ‘fit-for-purpose’.
      • CAPACITY, how much capacity do you require for your setup. This is rated in ampere hours (100ah)
      • POWER RATING, this amount of power your battery holds measured in watt/hours. 100ah 1280wh
      • CHARGE/DISCHARGE CAPABILITY, is a very important consideration when choosing the right battery for you. This capability is measured in Amps and is controlled by the Battery management System BMS. This governs the amount of amps that can pass through the battery when charging and discharging. This will limit the size of your inverter that you can run and at what rate you can charge the battery. So chose carefully.
      • CELL TYPE, Lithium batteries have advanced over the last 5 years and continue to advance at a rapid pace. Initially cylindrical cells were used in most LiFePO4 Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. They have now been replaced with lighter, more efficient prismatic cells. These allow more flexibility in packaging in smaller spaces and produce far higher cyclic capacity.
      • CYCLES, Prismatic cells are advancing due to the advancement of EV, Electric Vehicles driving the technology forward thus producing upwards of 4000-8000 cycles, thats 11-20 years of daily use. Whereas the older cylindrical cells are limited to 2000cycles.
      • COMMUNICATION, does your system require communication with other monitors and control panels, such as Victron GX or Cerbo, Chart-Plotters etc.
      • SIZE & SHAPE, is it compact enough or has a low profile  to fit under the seat of your motorhome.
      • CUSTOMER SUPPORT, Is the company you are buying from based in the UK, or just registered as a UK company operating from China?  Do they offer telephone based customer support, technical backup, free warranty repair or replacement. Can you talk to them on the phone?

    FUSING LITHIUM BATTERIES

    Why is it important to fuse your new Lithium Battery?

    The battery fuse protects the wiring — not the devices connected to them. When replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium (LiFePO4), a suitably rated primary battery fuse is essential. Its critical role is to protect the system from catastrophic short-circuit events. Unlike lead-acid batteries, LiFePO4 cells have extremely low internal resistance and in a dead-short scenario the battery can release many thousands of amps almost instantaneously for a split second. Without adequate protection, this can vaporise cables, potentially resulting in fire.  This means the fuse protecting your old lead-acid battery is no longer suitable. It will need replacing. You are likely to have a MEGA or MIDI fuse which are not appropriate for protecting Lithium batteries.  MEGA/MIDI fuses are ideal for use with Lead-acid batteries and protecting loads from chargers. But they do not have the right characteristics to protect your system from the power of Lithium. 

    LithiumPro Batteries have very powerful and advanced  Battery Management Systems (BMS) that are designed to protect against short circuit, reverse polarity and over current scenarios but this is NO substitute for having a correctly sized mechanical primary battery fuse.

    Its critical the fuse has a fast-acting element and the appropriate Ampere Interrupt Capacity (AIC) designed to blow quickly and safely. MEGA and MIDI fuses only have a maximum AIC rating of 2000A

    For safety and compliance, only use reputable fuse brands such as Blue Sea, Bussmann, Littelfuse, Mersen or Siemens with high AIC capacity ≥6000A. Never use cheap fuse alternatives from market places without datasheets or the fuse specification market on the fuse itself. – Proper fusing is the most critical safety component in your electrical system.

    Fuse Recommendations for Lithium Pro Batteries.

    For our drop-in-replacement range of batteries with capacities up to 180AH we recommend the MRBF fuse as they can be secured directly to the positive battery terminal which offers the safest approach – by not leaving any cable exposed without being fused.  They also have a high AIC rating of 10,000A.  Given the ‘drop-in-replacement’ range are often placed in height sensitive locations an ANL fuse & holder would be an suitable alternative as long as it has and AIC rating of ≥ 6000A. Always check the fuses manufacturers datasheet for the Interrupt rating.


    For our larger capacity batteries such as the 460AH-650AH we only recommend using a Class T or NH fuses. 

    Ensure you protect your lithium battery and the system by adding a high-quality primary battery fuse with the a suitable interrupt capacity. IMPORTANT: Only use notable brand fuses and not cheap fuses from various online market places.
